When a beloved game gets a new twist, it’s always a bit of a balancing act between honoring what players already love, while making room for something new. With Citadels Duel, we set out to foster a true two-player experience rooted in the DNA of the classic Citadels, while bringing in fresh tension, clever decisions, and plenty of replayability.
A game that was never meant for two… until now
Rather than squeezing a multi-player classic into a smaller box with half the components, Citadels Duel exists because the experience was rethought entirely. The original game simply wasn’t built for two players and trying to make it fit often meant compromises that didn’t quite capture the magic.
That reality was the starting point for designers Guillaume Montiage and Manu Rozoy. Instead of forcing it, they flipped the approach, and rather than retrofitting existing systems, they focused on crafting a genuine head-to-head experience that would stand confidently as its own game.
A fresh take, guided by new voices
The shift in perspective from simply “shrinking” the original game, to creating something entirely new, opened the door to meaningful innovation and answered the question in our heads as to “why a duel, why now?”
New systems were created with evolving city-building, tile-placement, and familiar mechanics all re-imagined to feel sharper, faster, and more personal. In a duel, every decision hits a little harder, and that’s exactly where this game shines.

“In this new version, there are many more ways to upend your opponent’s plans. Sway the newly added council board, strategically place the King’s Guard to protect your districts, or steal resources. A lot of the game’s tension comes not only from planning your own moves, but trying to predict your opponent’s.”
– Waleed Ma-arouf, lead developer of Citadels Duel at Z-Man Games

Fair play, with just the right amount of mischief
Designing for two players comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to balance. A great duel needs tension, but it also needs to feel fair from start to finish. We wanted to avoid common two-player pitfalls of feeling too punishing, swingy or frustrating.
While a touch of luck remains (just enough to keep things interesting), players have more control than ever over their strategy. Decisions feel meaningful, and tactical choices are consistently rewarded, but carefully tuned so no one can run too far ahead, keeping both players in the fight right through to the final moment. The result is a true tug-of-war experience. One round you’re ahead, the next your opponent pulls something unexpected, and its game-on again.
And yes, this is still a Citadels game, you’ll be blocking, outplaying, and occasionally ruining each other’s plans. But because the game is built with a strict balance, those moments land more gently in a space between a groan and a “well played” rather than a table flip.
